How to use these worksheets
- Print one page at a time. A whole stack at once feels like homework to a five year old.
- Point at the left group and ask your child to count it out loud, touching each shape with a pencil.
- Do the same for the right group, then ask: how many altogether? Let them count every shape again from the start.
- Write the answer in the box. If they get it wrong, count together once more instead of giving the answer.
- Six sums a day is plenty. One page takes most children 10 to 15 minutes.
Common problems, and what helps
Counting the same shape twice
Ask your child to put a small tick on each shape as they count it. This one habit fixes most wrong answers.
Writing numbers backwards
Reversed 3s and 7s are normal until age 6 or 7. Praise the correct sum and keep going.
Ready for more
Once your child finishes a page without help, cover one group with your hand and ask them to count on from the number they remember. That is the next step towards adding in their head.

What is picture addition?
Adding by counting objects. The child sees two groups of pictures, counts each group, then counts them together to find the total. It comes before adding written numbers.
Is picture addition taught in LKG or UKG?
Most Indian schools start picture addition in UKG, with sums up to 5 or 10. Some start simple ones late in LKG.
