How to use these worksheets
- Before starting, name the shapes on the page together: star, heart, circle, square, triangle, diamond.
- Read the first row out loud like a song: star, heart, star, heart. Children hear a pattern before they see it.
- Ask: what comes after heart? Let your child say it before drawing it in the box.
- Drawing a star is hard at this age. A rough shape is fine. What matters is choosing the right one.
- Stop after one page. Two or three rows done well beat a whole page done in tears.
Common problems, and what helps
Copying the last shape
Many children simply repeat the last shape they see. Clap the pattern together (clap for star, pat your knees for heart) and they usually spot it.
Struggling with AAB
Go back to an AB row first. Once AB feels easy, AAB is only one small step further.
Too easy?
Make patterns with real things at home: spoon, fork, spoon, fork, or red block, blue block. Ask your child to make one for you to finish.

What are what comes next worksheets?
